How to Host a Collection Drive in 3 Easy Steps

When children enter crisis situations, they often arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs. At Lowcountry Orphan Relief (LOR), we believe every child deserves dignity, comfort, and hope. One of the most powerful ways our community helps meet that need is through collection drives.

Collection drives are more than simple donations. They are opportunities for friends, families, workplaces, schools, and churches to come together to make a lasting impact. Drives not only stock our shelves with essential items for children in crisis, but also raise awareness and create a sense of unity around a shared mission: caring for the most vulnerable members of our community.

Why Collection Drives Matter

  • Meeting urgent needs: Every Care Kit we provide is filled with clothing, shoes, underwear, toiletries, books, and comfort items. Collection drives keep these shelves stocked so we are ready the moment a referral comes in.

  • Empowering the community: Hosting a drive gives people of all ages and backgrounds a meaningful way to make a difference.

  • Building awareness: Every participant learns more about the challenges faced by children in foster care, poverty, or crisis, and becomes part of the solution.

Hosting a Drive in 3 Easy Steps

Step 1: Choose Your Focus Decide what type of items you want to collect. Some of the most needed items include:

  • New or gently used clothing (all sizes, newborn through adult)

  • New socks and underwear

  • Pajamas

  • Shoes

  • Hygiene items such as shampoo, toothbrushes, and deodorant

  • Backpacks and school supplies

You can also choose a theme, such as “Pajama Party Drive” or “Back to School Bash,” to make it fun and engaging.

Step 2: Rally Your Community Spread the word by inviting your coworkers, church group, neighborhood, or school to participate. Share the details on social media, post flyers, and set up a collection bin in a convenient location. The more people you involve, the greater the impact.

Tip: Share stories or facts about why these items matter. For example, “Many children enter foster care with only the clothes they are wearing. Your donation ensures they have clean, new essentials on their very first night.”

Step 3: Deliver and Celebrate When your drive is complete, schedule a time to deliver your donations to LOR. Do not forget to celebrate your success. Share photos, thank participants, and reflect on the difference you have made together.
